Wisdom Teeth Extractions Near You
Wisdom teeth are the molars at the very back of your mouth. Some people may never have wisdom teeth or have enough room for them to grow in, while others will not have enough room for their teeth to grow properly. If your wisdom teeth grew in at an angle or are impacted, your dentist will recommend getting them removed. If you’re looking to receive wisdom teeth extractions near you, please contact our office.
The Process of Receiving Wisdom Teeth Extractions
If you’re interested in receiving wisdom teeth extractions in SE Calgary, we will provide you with anesthesia or sedation to ensure you feel comfortable and pain-free during the procedure. After we have completed the removal and stitched up your gums, you will slowly begin to wake up. We recommend arranging a ride to and from our office. As you start to regain feeling in your mouth, you may feel discomfort, swelling, and pain. We will provide thorough aftercare instructions, including any medication needed. It is essential to avoid alcohol, smoking, spitting, and drinking from a straw after your extraction.
Recovering from Wisdom Teeth Extractions
Typically, patients will recover three or four days after the surgery. However, it can take up to a week to recover if your teeth were impacted or at an angle. Please note the wound will fully heal in a couple of months. During this time, it is still possible to get an infection.
You can resume your daily activities the day after your extraction. However, please be careful to ensure your blood clots don’t get dislodged. They are crucial to preventing infections and healing the extraction sites. Please avoid the following:
- Intense exercise
- Spitting
- Drinking from a straw
- Smoking
It is normal to feel some swelling and pain after the extraction. If you find your pain is increasingly getting worse or unbearable, please contact us immediately. Also, please contact us if you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed below:
- Numbness
- Bleeding from your nose
- Fever
- Difficulties breathing or swallowing
- Medication doesn’t relieve your pain
- Non-stop bleeding with a gauze
Tips For a Smooth Recovery
It is essential to keep your mouth and extraction area clean to avoid an infection. While you may not be able to brush the first day, we recommend a saltwater rinse to clean your mouth. Let the water fall out of your mouth instead of spitting it out.
We recommend wrapping an ice pack around a cloth and placing it on your face to reduce the swelling. We will provide you with instructions and possibly prescription for medication and antibiotics during your recovery.
In the first few days, we recommend eating soft foods. These include cottage cheese, soup, mashed potatoes, apple sauce, and smoothies. It is important to avoid drinking from a straw, very hot foods, and crunchy or hard snacks that can get stuck in your wounds.
